The 2007 Montana State Legislature adjourned today sine die.
Good riddance.
To quote a local radio personality:"No man's property is safe when the Legislature is in session".
Montana gun owners won one round and lost two.
Won: SB 309, Prohibit confiscation of firearms during period of declared emergency. Measure passed, Governor signed.
Lost: HB 340, Citizen self-defense and firearms rights (AKA Castle Doctrine or stand your ground). This bill would have also done away with concealed weapons permits (Alaska/Vermont style carry). Measure failed.
Lost: HB 420, Exempt Montana made firearms, accessores & ammunition from the federal commerce clause. Measure failed.
This was a split legislature. The House was controlled by the Republicans (and that was only because one seat was filled by a member of the Constitution Party, who usually sided with the GOP) and the Senate was controlled by the Democrats. Neither chamber could get along with the other. Imagine that.
But they didn't spend the last 90 days doing nothing. Montana is now the only state with an official lullaby.
Good riddance.
